CNN —Nicole Randol — a Missouri-based mother of two boys, ages 6 and 10 — recently posted a message on a popular Facebook parenting group about Robux, the virtual gaming currency for the platform Roblox: Target was having a 40%-off sale for Robux. “I expect it to be the most exciting thing they open [on Christmas],” Randol, who bought two $100 Robux cards, told CNN. Gaming subscriptions continue to gain popularity, too. “What’s changed, naturally, is the games that families are playing.”According to ESA, more than 212 million Americans play video games on a regular basis. Still, with the rise of subscriptions and gaming currency, what lands under the Christmas tree may be smaller in size than years before.

Furby, the ’90s toy phenomenon that divided kids and parents into opposing camps when it first hit stores and quickly became a craze, is making yet another comeback. The latest iteration of the animatronic toy launched on Amazon Thursday and rolls into stores nationwide on July 15 after a nearly 10-year gap. Still, Hasbro said it sold more than 40 million Furby toys globally in the first three years after they launched. In 2016, Hasbro launched Furby Connect, a version of the toy that incorporated Bluetooth for content upgrades via an app and an off button. “There’s a saying in the toy industry that what’s old is new again,” he said.

Tweaks to the board games feature several age-inclusive components, said Ted Fisher, co-founder and CEO of Ageless Innovation, which specializes in developing toys for elderly consumers. Ageless InnovationThe new Scrabble Bingo 3-1 edition (priced at $40) has three games — the classic word game of Scrabble, Scrabble Bingo and Scrabble Pass. Foster said Hasbro reached out last year with the idea to adapt the three board games. Toy industry expert Jim Silver said age-inclusive Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and The Game of Life games make sense. I’m interested to see if Hasbro adds other board games, like Monopoly, to this effort,” he said.

New York CNN —Mattel is giving preschoolers a new age-appropriate Barbie doll that it says is better suited for their needs. Mattel launched a new Barbie doll, called My First Barbie, specifcially designed for preschoolers. My First Barbie is larger, 13.5 inches tall versus 11.5 inches for the standard Barbie fashion doll. My First Barbie is bigger than the originally Barbie fashion doll and features a softer body. First introduced as Barbie Millicent Roberts in 1959, Mattel sold 300,000 Barbie dolls in the first year of her launch.
